A new research conducted by scientists at Tohoku University in Japan indicates that eating more grapefruits, oranges and other citrus fruits could assist the body to offset the effects of age-related
cognitive impairment and also dementia.
Keep in mind that also these benefits derived from eating citrus fruits were found to be substantial. In fact, there was as much as a twenty-three percent (23%) average risk reduction for getting Alzheimer’s disease and other related forms of dementia.
This is not bad, considering the alternative of eating unhealthy foods, this may result in less brain function and the final years of life on all sorts of orthodox ineffective pharmaceutical drugs for dementia.
Daily consumption of citrus fruits minimize your risk of dementia
This research study took into consideration over 13,000 elderly and older adults and monitored their brain health and diet for as long as seven years. These subjects were then assessed based upon their rate of consumption of citrus fruits during their adult years and also whether or not they developed dementia or related types of cognitive impairment and if it happened, to what extent. The researchers revealed a direct correlation between the frequent eating of citrus fruits and preserving memory and brain health.
Those who were fed with oranges, grapefruits, lemons or lime daily were found to be 23% less likely to develop dementia and other cognitive impairment than those who consumed citrus just once a week or less frequently.
Those who were fed with citrus fruits less frequently were at far higher risk for a reduction in cognitive functioning as they age.
Fact: About fifty percent (50%) of adults over age 85 are afflicted with dementia
Currently, dementia affects about 1 in every 8 Americans over the age of 65 years. After the age of 85 years, this rate may increase by up to 50%. Yet, another research also indicates that dementia rates have been reducing in the United States and other Western countries since the year 2000 even though, personally, I have my doubts. There's no doubt, the researchers of Tohoku University believe that citrus have this positive effect on cognitive and memory issues due to the presence of a key brain-boosting component called nobiletin.
This chemical is well-known for stopping, slowing and even reversing the signs of memory loss and cognitive impairment in animals.
Nobiletin and vitamin C in citrus fruits offers some powerful defence against the effects of ageing thereby fights anti-ageing.
These Scientists from the University of Tohoku were aware of the significant and preventative effects of citrus fruits against cognitive impairment from a previous brain and dementia studies before they began their own research.
However, up until there hasn't been any research study clearly examining the relationship between citrus fruit consumption and dementia rates in such a direct way.
These findings are quite compelling. With the 13,000 older adults studied, a very distinct pattern emerged showing that the more we increase our citrus fruits consumption, the lower our risk of dementia and its related memory issues and cognitive impairment.
The study results were published in the Journal of Nutrition (ANI).
As we all know, citrus fruits are also loaded with vitamin C which brings additional benefits to brain health, our immune system and general cellular health. Let us face it: anything you can do to lower inflammation in cells is a good thing when it comes to brain health.
