Dandruff is a common term used to describe the white flakes which occasionally shed from our scalp (the part of the head where the hairs grow from). As a result, dandruffs are sometimes visible both in our hair and on our clothing (especially on our shoulders), which can sometimes be a nuisance.
In most instances,
dandruff isn't a serious health condition and it does not mean you are going bald. However, in rare occasions, severe dandruff can be a sign of a condition called Seborrheic Dermatitis.
If you experience persistent scalp irritation, itchiness, or red patches along the neckline then it is best to consult a medical doctor.
Causes of Dandruff
Dandruff mainly occurs through shedding of dead cells by the scalp. Everyone, including even people who are bald have this condition to some extent, but it can still be a matter of concern especially in social gatherings. Fortunately, there are a number of simple natural home remedies to reduce or totally prevent the appearance of dandruff flakes.It can also be caused by excess usage of hair mousse, spray and styling gel. Therefore it is best to apply these hair products in moderation at all times.
Natural Home Remedies for Dandruff
Olive Oil
Olive oil is an excellent way to treat dry scalp and reduce or prevent the appearance of dandruff flakes. Gently massage heated olive oil into the scalp as follows:
- Heat 1/4 cup of pure olive oil (virgin) in a microwave for about 30 seconds until it is warm
- Gently massage the heated oil on the scalp.
- Leave the oil in your hair for at least 20 minutes.
- After that, vigorously brush your hair with a natural bristle brush to loosen the dandruff scales.
- Wash the oil with a quality shampoo and water.
Thyme
This simple concoction made with thyme has been found to assist prevent the appearance of dandruff flakes.
- Boil 4 heaping tablespoons of dried thyme into 2 cups of warm water for at least ten (10) minutes.
- Strain the boiled mixture and allow the strained liquid to cool to room temperature.
- Wash your hair with shampoo and then apply 1/2 of the thyme liquid onto your damp hair.
- Gently massage the liquid into your scalp.
- Don't rinse, instead let the thyme liquid remain in your scalp for sometime.
- Keep the remaining thyme liquid in the refrigerator for future treatment.
